A Message to the Elected Officials According to USC Section 7206, â€Å"Making false statements on a tax return is a felony risking fines and imprisonment for up to 3 years.† This statement, along with Press Secretary Gibbs’ own words, â€Å"I think they both (Kellifer and Daschle) recognize that you can’t set an example of responsibility but accept a different standard on who serves,† indicate a presence acknowledged across America: that a social contract exists between the governed and their government and it is being abrogated in favor of the personal interests of our top elected and appointed officials and their respective political parties. This contract is simple: People from the general population are elected to form our†¦show more content†¦Senator Daschle stepped down, not because he admitted to a serious infraction of the law (which consequences include possible prison time), and not because he lacked support from the president who had â€Å"full confidence† in him, but because public sentiment was against him. The public- not the public servant- was attempting to maintain the integrity of contract. The overriding and disturbing issue, here, is that a de facto legitimization of tax evasion and fraud has gradually developed over the years irrespective of which current political party is in power. This same level of tax evasion was sufficient to jail the likes of Scarface Al Capone. Now, it is merely â€Å"embarrassing† and a â€Å"mistake?† The strongest concern voiced from the president, the congress or the judiciary has come from Senator Daschle who withdrew because this issue was detracting attention from the presidency. Not a word from the executive, legislative or judicial branch about criminal proceedings over what is an epidemic of abrogation-if not active suborning- of our government and its public servants. The contract is being torn up and tossed away over the very reason it was created. Earlier, Senator Stevens was investigated by the FBI and subsequently brought up on charges that his â€Å"Financial Disclosure forms contained false statements and omissions.† Is the FBI used for the public good or personal vendettas?
